Education

Jan Willem Foppe van Mil, was born on July 16th 1950 and raised in Waalwijk, The Netherlands. After the Dutch highschool/college (HBS-B) he studied Pharmacy in Utrecht, finishing in December 1977. While in the university, he was treasurer for several student organisations. He participated in a IPSF student exchange program, living in Canada for a six month period. He also lived in Israel for 3 months on a student exchange basis.
As a student he travelled to other European countries like Denmark, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. While on the board of the Dutch Association of Pharmacy-students (ANPSV) he helped to develop a European curriculum. During his last four years at the university, he taught drug-identification to undergraduates.
Foppe van Mil speaks and writes Dutch, English, German and French.

Professional career

After Foppe van Mil completed his studies, he became community-pharmacist in the pharmacy of a community health-centre in Lewenborg, Groningen in January 1978.
In 1981 he took over the management of the pharmacy in the village of Zuidlaren, the Zuidlaarder Apotheek. He bought that pharmacy in 1982. By 2000 the pharmacy had 18 employees including two other pharmacists. Under his management the pharmacy received a quality certificate in April 2001. He sold the pharmacy by the end of 2000, and worked 2 days per week as pharmacist in the same pharmacy till 1st January 2006 (now Kring-Apotheek Zuidlaren).
From June 1st 2006 - 31 October 2006 he worked as one of the managing pharmacists at Apotheek it Krúswâld in Buitenpost, the Netherlands.
From June-October 2007 he worked as managing pharmacist in Kring-apotheek Zuidhorn, the Netherlands.
In January-March 2008 he worked as managing pharmacist in Escura Apotheek de Schrans in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. And in May he worked briefly in Apotheek Kouwenhoven in the same city.
In between June 2008 and November 2008 he worked as managing pharmacist in Escura Apotheek A-straat in Goningen and Escura Apotheek Zultherveld in Roden.
Between november 2008 and May 2009 he worked as pharmacist in Kring-apotheek Zuidhorn.
Between October and December 2009, he worked as managing pharmacist in Kring-apotheek aan de Markt in Ter Apel.
From February till June 2010 he worked again as managing pharmacist in Escura Apotheek de Schrans in Leeuwarden.

Academic career

After the completion of his university studies, Foppe van Mil returned to the alma mater in 1993 and worked several months for The Noordelijk Centrum voor Gezondheidswetenschappen (NCG) of the University of Groningen, a WHO collaborative centre. He finalised a study into the quality of the information provided with exported Dutch drugs to developing countries, which resulted in the report ‘Dutch Drugs in developing countries’.
From June 1993 till July 1998 he worked (part-time) for the working group Social Pharmacy of the University Centre of Pharmacy in Groningen on the concept of Pharmaceutical Care. The work resulted in a PhD-thesis under supervision of Prof. Th.F.J. Tromp, Prof. Dr. L.T.W. de Jong van den Berg and Prof. J. McElnay, which was successfully defended on 28th of January 2000. During this phase of his university career, Foppe van Mil still worked in his pharmacy.
Since 1996 he (co-)organised a number of national Symposia on Pharmaceutical Care in the Netherlands. He taught and teaches in several continuing education programs for FIP, KNMP, Astra and Postgrade/Glaxo Wellcome. Over the last years Foppe van Mil has been invited to many national and international conferences as a speaker or workshop-leader on subjects related to the concept and implementation of pharmaceutical care, pharmacy practice research, social pharmacy, international pharmacy and the role of pharmacists in the combat against AIDS. In June 2000 he accepted the position as a supervisor of the Masters Project of a Portuguese student. This project was concluded in July 2002 with the thesis ‘Patient perceived care needs, an input to the design of pharmaceutical care programs’. During the viva she received the qualification ‘Very Good’.
In 2001 he was deemed suitable as an Associate Professor in Pharmacy Practice at the University of Tromsø, Norway, and was offered a full-time position. This did not lead to an appointment because he only wanted to work part-time in Tromsø.
Untill December 2008 he was also partially affiliated to the Quality Institute for Pharmaceutical Care in Kampen, the Netherlands as researcher and consultant.

KNMP (Royal Dutch Society for the Advancement of Pharmacy)

From 1979 till 1984 he was member of the Commissie voor Collectieve Voorlichting (CCV) of the KNMP. This committee created the first public relation initiative of KNMP and Dutch pharmacists;
In 1987 he was member of the Congrescommissie, a committee that organised the yearly three-day convention for all Dutch pharmacists;
From 1987-1989 he also was mentor for the inter professional quality assessment of colleagues;
In 1988, with F.J. Venema he co-authored a book on drug-use for laymen entitled 'Slikwijzer'. The book was published in co-operation with KNMP;
From 1990-1995 he was member of the pharmacotherapeutic committee of the KNMP. In this committee several aspects of the rational use of pharmaceuticals were discussed. The committee also gave some guidance to the KNMP-Drug Information Centre and assessed the contents of the Informatorium;
Since October 1994 he was chairman of the Pharmaceutical Care on AIDS working group, supported by KNMP and Dutch AIDS-foundation. The project finished in July 1997 with the publication of the book ‘Pharmacists and Aids, an unknown territory;
Between 1998 and 2002 he was a member of the steering committee on pharmaceutical care for WINAp, a division of KNMP. The steering committee advised the WINAp on pharmaceutical care activities and co-ordinated the activities of the Special Interest Groups on pharmaceutical care and advises the board of WINAp;
Between 1998 and 2003 he was on the organising committee of the annual WINAp symposia on Pharmaceutical care (FPZ);
From September 2000 till December 2004 he was Chairman of the SIG Pharmaceutical Care & Pharmacy Practice Research for the Pharmaceutisch Weekblad, the Dutch pharmaceutical journal that appears weekly.

Pharma selecta

In 1985 he founded Pharma Selecta, an independent and critical journal for Dutch community and hospital pharmacists in The Netherlands, currently read by 3700. Pharma Selecta is an associate member of the International Society of Drug Bulletins (ISDB). He was editor-in- chief of the bulletin till 1994;
From 1985 to 2011 he was the Chairman of the Pharma Selecta Foundation;
In 1988, he started a database under Pharma Selecta, called PS-On Line in 1990. Currently it contains approx. 4000 excerpts from pharmacotherapeutic articles that the Dutch pharmacist can easily access and now is marketed as PS-on disk, for use in MS-Dos and Window computers;
In 1990 and 1995 he co-developed and co-organised a postgraduate pharmacotherapeutic training seminar for Dutch retail-pharmacists, the 'Doedagen', attended by over 200 participants also for Pharma Selecta;
He also was the Chairman of the Organising Committee and Chairman of the Pharma Selecta Conference on drug development 17th January 2003 and chairman and organiser of the Pharma Selecta Symposium, held 28th October 2005 on pharmacogenetics.
Currently he is also involved in writing abstracts for PS-on disk and the management of the address database for the bulletin.

ESCP (The European Society for Clinical Pharmacy)

* From October 1994 till October 1996: Member of the board of the Special Interest Group for Drug Information (now medicine information) of the European Society for Clinical Pharmacy and since October 1996 the Chairman of this SIG till 2000;
* From May 1995- September 1998: Chairman of the Organisation Committee and chairman of the ESCP-Drug Information Conference in Amsterdam, held in May 1997;
* Between 1998 and 2003 moderator of the Mailing list for the SIG Medicine information of ESCP;
* Chairman and tutor of the Mini Symposium of the ESCP SIG Drug information in Orlando, Florida, USA held at 11th April 1999 during the International Congress on Clinical Pharmacy ‘Documenting the value of Clinical Pharmacy Services’;

PCNE is an international research network in the field of pharmaceutical care of which Dr. van Mil is a founding member.

* Professional Secretary of PCNE since September 2005.

Other (professional) activities

* Served from 1978 till 1992 on the board of several regional organisations of community pharmacists such as GAV and 'Departement Groningen van de KNMP';
* Participated the founding of the 'Geneesmiddelenwinkel' (1981) of the University of Groningen and a community health-centre in Beijum, Groningen (1981);
* Organised and guided excursions in 1979 and 1982 for Dutch community pharmacists to Sweden and the United Kingdom studying local pharmacy practice;
* Taught pharmacotherapy and prescribing to GP's at the University of Groningen between 1986 and 1995;
* Examined post-graduate community pharmacy students between 1985 and 2000 for their Pharm D;
* September 1994-2004: Member of the Committee for continuing education of the section Community Pharmacy of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP);
* 1995-2003 member of the Working Group for AIDS and Drug Addiction of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP);
* In 1996 he co-authored the book ‘het Geneesmiddel’ on social pharmacy in the Netherlands for three editions. The second edition was published in 1999 and third amended edition has appeared in 2002;
* From July 1996 till February 1999 member of the Editorial Board of Pharmacy World and Science;
* Member of the Scientific Committee of the journal Pharmaceutical Care España since
1999 until end of 2003.
* Editor-in-Chief of the International Pharmaceutical Journal since 1st January 2000 till 2005;
* Editor-in-Chief of Pharmacy, World & Science since 1st August 2000;
* Temporary Task Force Manager of The HIV/AIDS Task Force of Europharm Forum from 1st September 2000 till 1st February 2001;
* Co-author of the book 'Farmaceutische Patiëntenzorg' [Pharmaceutical Care], 1st edition published in October 2005.
* Taught Good Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical care, in cooperation with FIP, in Uruguay during a one-week course in November 2005.
* Taught Good Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical care in Perú during a one-week Conference in November 2006.
* Teaches medication Review for the Dutch DGV (now IVM) since 2007.
* In 2010 he designed materials for continuing education for pharmacists internationally, and also redesigned a course on medication review for Dutch physicians and community pharmacists.

Awards
In October 1993 Foppe van Mil received the 'Innovation Award' of the K.N.M.P., for his innovative work in Dutch pharmacy.
In March 1995 he received the 'Opwierda prijs' as co-author of an article on pharmaceutical care and asthma from the Pharmaceutisch Weekblad.
In October 1999 he received the official Award of the Gipuzkoa Pharmacist Association (in Spain) for his work in promoting pharmaceutical care in Europe.
In November 2006 he received a medal as 'Professor Teacher & Investigator' from the Jorge Basadre Grohman National University in Tacna, Peru as recognition for his teaching and research activities.
